(Updated 2024)

It’s Valentine’s Day.

Not a huge deal in the Bjerga household.

JB is not really a chocolate and flowers kind of guy.

He’s more of the ‘I fixed the bathroom shelf today’ kind of guy.

It took me a while to learn his love languages. 🙂

(And now I have to reconsider the whole ‘love languages’ concept anyway – because they are no longer considered scientifically sound).

Also,  I’m a big believer in trying to show my love and appreciation more than just one day a year…

Still. I’m a sucker for mush and cute decorations, and luckily he puts up with that.

I am also a sucker for self-improvement literature, and my collection is vast.

My top three favorites in this department after almost 36 years of marriage are these: Love is Never Enough, Feeling Good Together and Come as you are.

And although online listicles are more often than not trite click bait, And although online listicles are more often than not trite click bait, I found one a few years ago that made total sense. The article itself is no longer to be found online, but the list still makes me chuckle.

The only marriage advice you’ll ever need

  1. Arguing is healthy. (But you have to do it right)
  2. Communication is key.
  3. Prioritize your partner.
  4. Take care of yourself.
  5. Make time for date night.
  6. Log off social media.
  7. Sex matters.
  8. Sometimes sex takes work.
  9. Go to bed angry.
  10. It’s OK to be imperfect.
  11. Never give up.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
